GOV. MITT ROMNEY: SURGE OF SUPPORT AT HOME

Posted in Press Release by schotline on July 31st, 2007

Governor Romney“We don’t just need a surge on the ground in Iraq – we need a surge of support for our troops as well. Democrats say they support the troops, but many don’t support the work they are doing to make the surge successful. Representative Clyburn, the third-highest ranking House Democrat, said it would be ‘a real big problem’ for Democrats if progress is made in Iraq. That’s not a problem but good news for all Americans.” – Gov. Mitt Romney

THE ROMNEY VISION: LEADERSHIP SURGE NEEDED TO DEFEAT RADICAL ISLAM GLOBALLY

Gov. Romney Blasted Rep. Clyburn’s Recent Comments That Good News In Iraq Was Trouble For Democrats. ROMNEY: “We don’t just need a surge on the ground in Iraq – we need a surge of support for our troops as well. Democrats say they support the troops, but many don’t support the work they are doing to make the surge successful. Representative Clyburn, the third-highest ranking House Democrat, said it would be a ‘real big problem’ for Democrats if progress is made in Iraq. That’s not a problem but good news for all Americans.” (Gov. Mitt Romney, 7/31/07)

Gov. Romney Calls Defeatist Talk Of Some Democrats “Inexcusable.” “Romney said it was ‘inexcusable’ for Democrats and others to publicly claim that this nation has lost the war in Iraq while troops remain in that country.” (Robynn Tysver, “Romney: Give Iraq War Plan More Time,” Omaha World-Herald, 7/28/07)

Gov. Romney: Give The New Iraq War Plan Enough Time To Work. ROMNEY: “Let’s give General Petraeus and Prime Minister Maliki enough time to see if it is working. If it’s working, great. We’ll be able to bring home our troops soon. If it’s not working, we’ll consider the problem at that point.” (Robynn Tysver, “Romney: Give Iraq War Plan More Time,” Omaha World-Herald, 7/28/07)

Gov. Romney Stresses The Importance Of Winning In Iraq And Defeating Radical Islam Globally. ROMNEY: “The congressional debate in Washington has largely, and myopically, focused on whether troops should be redeployed from Iraq to Afghanistan, as if these were isolated issues. Yet the jihad is much broader than any one nation, or even several nations. … The jihadist threat is the defining challenge of our generation and is symptomatic of a range of new global realities.” (Gov. Mitt Romney, “Rising To A New Generation Of Global Challenges,” Foreign Affairs, July/August 2007)

Gov. Romney Warns That Radical Islamists Want To End “Civilization As We Know It.” “The former Massachusetts governor has been one of President Bush’s staunchest supporters of the war. He routinely talks about the threat of radical Islamists and, he says, their desire to install an Islamic regime around the world. “They want to cause the collapse, the collapse of civilization as we know it,” he said.” (Robynn Tysver, “Romney: Give Iraq War Plan More Time,” Omaha World-Herald, 7/28/07)

THE DEMOCRATS: “A REAL BIG PROBLEM” WITH SUCCESS IN IRAQ

House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC) Said A Positive Iraq Report From Gen. Petraeus In September Would Prevent The Democrats From Declaring Defeat. “[Clyburn] said Monday that a strongly positive report on progress on Iraq by Army Gen. David Petraeus likely would split Democrats in the House and impede his party’s efforts to press for a timetable to end the war. … Clyburn noted that Petraeus carries significant weight among the 47 members of the Blue Dog caucus in the House, a group of moderate to conservative Democrats. Without their support, he said, Democratic leaders would find it virtually impossible to pass legislation setting a timetable for withdrawal.” (Dan Balz and Chris Cillizza, “Clyburn: Positive Report by Petraeus Could Split House Democrats on War,” The Washington Post, 7/30/07)

Rep. Clyburn: A Positive Report On Iraq Would Be “A Real Big Problem For Us.” “‘I think there would be enough support in that group to want to stay the course and if the Republicans were to stay united as they have been, then it would be a problem for us,’ Clyburn said. ‘We, by and large, would be wise to wait on the report.’ … Many Democrats have anticipated that, at best, Petraeus and U.S. ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker would present a mixed analysis of the success of the current troop surge strategy, given continued violence in Baghdad. But of late there have been signs that the commander of U.S. forces might be preparing something more generally positive. Clyburn said that would be ‘a real big problem for us.’” (Dan Balz and Chris Cillizza, “Clyburn: Positive Report by Petraeus Could Split House Democrats on War,” The Washington Post, 7/30/07)

Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) Claimed The U.S. Has Already Lost In Afghanistan To Al Qaeda And Bin Laden. SEN. HILLARY CLINTON: “We’ve got to figure out what we’re doing in Iraq, where our troops are stretched thin, and Afghanistan, where we’re losing the fight to al Qaeda and bin Laden.” (CNN/YouTube, Democrat Presidential Candidate Debate, Charleston, SC, 7/23/07)

Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) Proclaimed That The “War Is Lost” Before The Surge Was Even Fully Implemented. “Senate majority leader Harry Reid said yesterday that the war in Iraq is ‘lost,’ triggering an angry backlash from Republicans who said the top Democrat had turned his back on the troops. … ‘I believe myself that the secretary of state, secretary of defense, and – you have to make your own decisions as to what the president knows – [know] this war is lost and the surge is not accomplishing anything as indicated by the extreme violence in Iraq yesterday,’ said Reid, a Nevada Democrat.” (Anne Flaherty, “Reid Says War Is ‘Lost,’ Drawing GOP Rebuke,” The Associated Press, 4/20/07)

Jim Clyburn, Democrats invest in U.S. failure

Posted in Press Release by schotline on July 31st, 2007

SCGOP Chairman says Democrats politicizing war on terror

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Katon Dawson today released the following statement regarding U.S. Rep. James Clyburn’s claims that a “strongly positive report on progress on Iraq” would be “a real big problem” for Democrats:

“Winning the war on terror may be politically inconvenient for Jim Clyburn, but losing the war on terror is incomprehensible for those who fight and die defending freedom,” said Dawson. “Democrats politically invested in U.S. failure have deliberately sought to tie the hands of our troops by denying them resources needed to win in Iraq. The actions of Democrat leaders constitute a breech of public trust and disregard for our safety and security.”

As reported by the Washington Post: “House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) said Monday that a strongly positive report on progress on Iraq by Army Gen. David Petraeus likely would split Democrats in the House and impede his party’s efforts to press for a timetable to end the war… Of late there have been signs that the commander of U.S. forces might be preparing something more generally positive. Clyburn said that would be ‘a real big problem for us.’”

Senator Graham sends out first mailpiece of campaign

Posted in Uncategorized by schotline on July 31st, 2007

We believe this is the first mail piece of the Senate campaign for Senator Graham. It is very interesting he is focused on immigration and President Bush. We have seen three pieces and they were all addressed to only women in the family. Could Sen. Graham have a gender gap? Is that the reason he is now targeting women GOP voters? We have a PDF of the piece below.

Ethics Bill Guts Earmark Disclosure

DeMint Calls on Senators to Support Amendment to Restore Real Earmark Reform

homepest.JPGWASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina) made following statement Monday after reviewing the new Lobbying and Ethics Bill:

“There’s a lot of smoke and mirrors in the new ethics bill, but upon a close look its obvious that earmark transparency reforms have been eviscerated.  Senator Reid has given himself and a few committee chairmen the authority to determine whether congressional earmarks have been properly disclosed to the public.  My office has confirmed this with the Senate Parliamentarian. Under this bill, the American people would be forced to trust Senator Reid and Senator Byrd – two of the biggest earmarkers in the Senate – to certify earmark disclosure.  This bill allows the fox to guard the henhouse and makes a joke of ethics reform.”

“I will offer an amendment to this bill to restore real earmark reform, and I hope all of my colleagues will support it.  The culture of earmarks is what drives the culture of corruption, and if we don’t fix the earmark rules in this bill, we will continue to have business as usual in Washington.”

“This bill is nothing more than the status quo, allowing every chairman to decide whether to disclose earmarks or not.  Senator Byrd has already ‘certified’ that he is complying with disclosure now, but an independent group, Taxpayers for Common Sense, already showed that $7.5 billion in earmarks have been undisclosed. The favor factory is still open and ready for business.”

DODD FOR PRESIDENT WELCOMES NEW INTERNET TECHNOLOGY DIRECTOR, AARON WELCH

Posted in Uncategorized by schotline on July 31st, 2007

WASHINGTON - Presidential Candidate Chris Dodd’s campaign today announced that Aaron Welch will join the campaign’s team as Internet Technology Director. Welch will be responsible for upgrading, maintaining and expanding the internet technology infrastructure as well as managing production of new and innovative online tools. Welch brings a cutting-edge style to the already innovative internet strategy in place at the campaign. In addition, Welch brings a wealth of experience honed in part while serving as Lead Developer for Howard Dean’s Iowa campaign in 2004.

fjones-3a2.jpg“We’re really excited to have Aaron on board - he’s going to make a great addition to our internet team,” said Tim Tagaris, Dodd’s Internet Director. “Senator Dodd’s bold views on the Iraq war, health care, and energy are definitely gaining traction in the online community, and Aaron’s experience and vision is only going to increase that effort.”

Welch is a partner and co-founder of the technology firm Advomatic, which has worked with a wide range of progressive causes and several corporate clients. Clients of Advomatic have included NRDC, Yearly Kos, Air America Radio, Josh Marshall’s TPM Cafe, PDF TechPresident, Music for America, Joe Conason, Maplight, Greenopia, Sony / BMG and Viacom. Advomatic is also a sponsor of YearlyKos, which Dodd will attend next month.

Welch joins a campaign technology team that has been praised in prominent media outlets such as the Washington Post for its Talk Clock and D-TV applications. Thousands of viewers have tuned in to D-TV to see live coverage of Senator Dodd. This past week, Dodd live-streamed his heath care plan roll out in Iowa on Thursday and answered submitted questions before the CNN/YouTube Democratic debate on Monday.

Lindsey Graham Newsletter - July 27, 2007

Graham adds $3 billion for border security

Senator Lindsey Graham today said he was very pleased the Senate passed his amendment to provide $3 billion for increased border security and interior enforcement measures. Provisions in the Graham amendment provide and require:

  • The U.S. government to establish and demonstrate operational control over 100 percent of the international land and maritime borders between the U.S. and Mexico.
  • Provides funding to construct the 700 miles of fencing as required under the Secure Fence Act.
  • Provides funding for hiring, training, and placing on duty 23,000 Customs and Border Patrol agents.
  • Permanently ends “Catch and Release” by providing the resources necessary to detain up to 45,000 aliens per day.
  • Provides funding to handle the deportation of absconders and visa overstays.

“In the age of terrorism, regaining operational control of our nation’s borders is a national security issue of the highest order,” said Graham. “There is no doubt we need better border security at our southern border including more boots on the ground, more miles of fencing, better technology which acts as a force multiplier, additional detention beds, and unmanned aerial vehicles.”

“One of the true stalwarts of freedom”

At Senator Graham’s invitation, President Bush visited Charleston Air Force Base on Tuesday to visit with our troops and to make a case for why Americans should remain in Iraq until the job is done.

Before he summarized intelligence that indicated how the biggest terrorists in Iraq have direct ties to Osama bin Laden, the President made the following remarks:

“I am traveling today with one of the true stalwarts of freedom, a man who understands the stakes of the war we’re in, and a man who strongly supports the military in accomplishing the mission that we’ve sent you to do, and that’s Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.”

View the President’s Charleston speech here.

Graham defends troops on Meet the Press

Senator Graham passionately defended the efforts of our troops in Iraq on NBC’s Meet The Press on July 15 as “very much part of a global struggle” against al-Qaida and radical Islamic terrorism.

Sen. Graham verbally sparred with Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) during the interview about the desire of some in the Congress to micromanage the war in Iraq instead of allowing General David Petraeus the control, time, and funds necessary to be successful.

“The new strategy of getting more combat power where al-Qaida and others reside, I think, has been enormously successful,” Sen. Graham said. “Al-Qaida has come to Iraq. (Osama) bin Laden has said this is the equivalent of the Third World War. So what’s going on in Iraq is not about us wanting to own Iraq; it’s about us supporting a form of moderation not known to the Mideast.”

Watch clips from the show here.

We must go forward in Iraq

Senator Graham’s editorial “We Must Go Forward in Iraq,” laid out compelling arguments for continued support of the War on Terror and the surge in Iraq. Published July 24 in The Greenville News, The State, The Charleston Post & Courier and several other South Carolina newspapers, he wrote:

“I passionately believe Iraq is part of a global struggle affecting our national security. Iraq is the central battlefront in the War on Terror and we must prevail.”

Sen. Graham fights Democratic maneuver to withdraw troops

On the night of July 18, Senate Democrats staged a Beltway production of political theater by hosting an all-night debate over an amendment which would have mandated American troop withdrawals from Iraq beginning in 120 days. Sen. Graham fought against, and eventually helped to defeat, this dangerous bill.

“This approach would be a disaster for our national security interests — both in Iraq and throughout the Middle East,” said Sen. Graham. “Al Qaeda is now on the run in Iraq. They would welcome and rejoice over an American plan to withdraw from the fight. A congressional mandate to withdraw would be heart-breaking, and in all honesty, a death sentence to the Iraqis who are aligning with us against Al Qaeda in Iraq. I’m proud of the role I played in rejecting this amendment.”

Beltram: Ethics violator should not have state contract from Rex

Posted in Uncategorized by schotline on July 30th, 2007

The Jim Rex - Zeke Stokes campaign scandal continues to be a story.  In case you missed it, here is an article from last week’s Spartanburg Herald Journal.  Spartanburg GOP Chairman Rick Beltram deserves credit for standing up against the corruption.

By ROBERT W. DALTON, bob.dalton@shj.com

Spartanburg County Republican Party Chairman Rick Beltram is crying foul over a consulting contract State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex has given to his former campaign manager.

Zeke Stokes began the job May 1, and the contract extends through June 30, 2008. The department is paying him $1,200 a week for three days of work each week, and the contract would be worth about $73,000 if Stokes works the entire 61-week period.

The agreement calls for Stokes to consult on a variety of issues, including the department’s communications strategy, operations, outreach and scheduling and event preparations for Rex.

But Beltram said he believes Rex gave the contract to reward Stokes for “falling on his sword.”

Stokes last week pleaded guilty to violating state ethics laws by sending campaign e-mails to public school employees at their school e-mail addresses. The Ethics Commission, which earlier found that Rex had no knowledge of Stokes’ actions, fined Stokes $50.

“At the time the contract was signed (April 25), he was under investigation and said he didn’t do what he was accused of doing,” Beltram said. “It just seems to have a terrible stink that he was under investigation, pleaded guilty and walked away with a lucrative contract.”

Jim Foster, a spokesman for Rex, said Stokes was hired because he has a background in communications and he comes in with knowledge of Rex’s plan for the department. For instance, Foster said, Stokes is spending this week putting together the task forces Rex announced to deal with equity funding and taxation issues.

“Zeke is very good at what he does, and he understands Dr. Rex’s plans for improving education,” Foster said. “He’s helping us develop those plans and put them into practice. There’s no dark conspiracy here; this is not an episode of the X-Files or an Oliver Stone movie.”

It’s not unusual for successful candidates to hire campaign workers. Gov. Mark Sanford, for example, hired Jason Miller, who managed Sanford’s 2006 re-election bid, to “build coalitions” for $106,000 a year. Miller has since left to work on the presidential campaign of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

John Crangle, spokesman for the taxpayer watchdog group Common Cause, said the amount Rex is paying Stokes is “at the high end of the spectrum, but it’s not unreasonable.”

Beltram has been on a one-man crusade against Stokes - and by extension, Rex - ever since Rex defeated Republican candidate Karen Floyd of Spartanburg by 455 votes. It was Beltram who filed the ethics complaint that eventually led to Stokes’ $50 fine, and he wasn’t pleased by the outcome. He said he now has sent letters to Sanford and Attorney General Henry McMaster asking them to investigate the commission.

For his part, Stokes said he can’t comprehend Beltram’s “obsession” with him.

“For someone who says they care so much about the future of South Carolina, you’d think there would be more important things for (Beltram) to be involved in,” Stokes said. “While Beltram is attacking us and trying to undermine us for being Democrats who know how to win, we’re focusing on the work the people of South Carolina sent us here to do.”

The Greenville News also ran an editorial on this subject and printed an oped by SCRG President Randy Page regarding our take on this issue.  Check them both out on our website.

Clearly, something is amiss when somebody is found guilty of misusing public resources and then rewarded with a hefty taxpayer funded contract.  Write your paper and legislators.  Tell them you are tired of the corruption.
