KEN WINGATE ENDORSES GOV. ROMNEY
SC CONSERVATIVE LEADER AND PAST INTERIM STATE TREASURER KEN WINGATE ENDORSES GOV. ROMNEYBoston, MA - Today, Governor Mitt Romney announced that Ken Wingate, former Interim State Treasurer has joined his South Carolina Leadership Team.
Wingate is both a fiscal and social conservative leader in South Carolina. After running as a strong conservative for Governor of South Carolina in 2002, he has since served current Governor Mark Sanford’s administration in many capacities. Wingate led Sanford’s efforts to reform and restructure State government in 2003. And when former State Treasurer Thomas Ravenel resigned this past summer, Wingate was appointed by Sanford to step in and serve as interim State Treasurer. His strong leadership was widely hailed by Republicans and Democrats alike during a time of great unrest in that office.
“Mitt Romney is a successful businessman who knows how to turn things around,” said Wingate. “To cut through the red tape of bureaucracy in government and get results, we desperately need a strong man of conviction from outside of Washington, someone who has real world business experience and that man is Mitt Romney.”
Wingate is well known with social conservatives for his leadership on the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. While serving on the Commission, he has championed efforts to bring back a sense of decency to college curriculum. In the past, he has been actively involved leading anti gambling organizations working successfully to ban video poker in South Carolina.
Announcing the support of Wingate, Governor Romney said, “Ken has served the State of South Carolina with honor and distinction. His strong and selfless leadership within the Republican Party is also well known throughout the state. He will be a great addition to my South Carolina team.”
Former Interim Treasurer Wingate will join an already strong Romney for President South Carolina team that includes United States Senator Jim DeMint and numerous other leaders across the state.
