SCRG Statement Regarding State of the State Address
Columbia, SC – SCRG President Randy Page released the following statement in support of Governor Mark Sanford’s comments on education reform during his annual State of the State address:
SCRG applauds Governor Sanford’s continued support of real education reform in South Carolina. Specifically, we agree with his persistent call for educational choices, a funding system in which money is tied directly to the child, and his call for consolidating school districts.
As the Governor correctly states, “Educated minds are one of this state’s biggest keys to unlocking the doors to opportunity.” It should not matter where those minds are educated, so long as they are educated. That’s why a school choice policy that includes all options – public and private – is warranted.
Additionally, consolidated school districts and a funding formula whereby money follows the child will allow more resources to go where they should – into the classroom rather than administration.
These are all common-sense reforms that have bi-partisan support. Most importantly, these reforms will help more children receive the quality education they need and deserve, which will in turn benefit our great state. SCRG stands ready to work with Governor Sanford and the General Assembly in order to implement these changes as quickly as possible.
