FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GREENVILLE, S.C.-Mike McConnell, the United States Director of National
Intelligence (DNI), will give a public address on global intelligence and
U.S. national security, Friday, March 28 at 11 a.m. on the Furman
University campus.
The address, which will take place in Watkins Room of the University
Center, will focus on the challenges of intelligence in a global world and
address the greatest issues and threats facing America. The public is
invited to attend without charge.
McConnell, a native of Greenville and a 1966 graduate of Furman, was
sworn in as the nation’s second Director of National Intelligence on Feb.
13, 2007. The DNI serves as the head of the Intelligence Community, and
acts as the principal advisor to the President, National Security Council
and Homeland Security Council for intelligence matters related to national
security.
Prior to being named DNI, McConnell spent 29 years in the U.S. Navy-26 as
a career intelligence officer-and retired in 1996 as a vice admiral. He
also served as director of the National Security Agency (NSA) from 1992 to
1996, and led the organization as it adapted to the multi-polar threats
brought about by the end of the Cold War. Under his leadership, NSA
provided global intelligence and information security services to the
White House, Cabinet officials and the Congress in addition to military
and civil intelligence customers.
McConnell also served as a member of the Director of Central
Intelligence’s senior leadership team during that time, addressing major
intelligence programmatic and substantive issues from 1992 until 1996.
Prior to his service at NSA, he worked as the intelligence officer for the
chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Secretary of Defense.
Just before assuming his position of Director of National Intelligence,
he served as a senior vice president with the consulting firm Booz Allen
Hamilton, where he focused on the areas of intelligence and national
security. He holds a B.A. degree in economics from Furman and a M.P.A.
from George Washington University, and is a graduate of the National
Defense University and the National Defense Intelligence College.
McConnell’s visit is sponsored by The Riley Institute at Furman in
cooperation with the Greater Greenville Chamber of Commerce and is made
possible through the support of The Mayville Foundation.
