LEXINGTON, SC – State Representative Nikki Haley today announced that the Columbia College Alliance for Women and Commission on Women has named her a 2008 Woman of Achievement for furthering the status of women in the area of political participation.

“Representative Haley is respected in the House as a voice of reason,” said Commissioner Margaret Pope. “She has never run away from the tough issues facing South Carolina. She represented South Carolina at the World Economic Forum in China; she served on a Conference Committee to negotiate one of the state’s most pressing economic development issues – worker’s compensation reform. She has been an advocate for education, economic development and the wise use of the state’s resources.

“Nikki has been a voice for change. Nikki has worked to be more than a role model for women in the political process, but also to be a catalyst to encourage women to get involved. We honor that spirit of encouragement and political leadership.”

Nikki Haley thanked the Columbia College Alliance for Women and the Commission on Women stating, “I am grateful to the Alliance and the Commission for their hard work. This award means a great deal to me personally, and I know that together we can continue to encourage women and men alike to become more politically active.”
