Armed Forces Day Celebration coming Friday, May 16 at 6 p.m.
The Annual Greenville Armed Forces Day Celebration, hosted by Lockheed Martin, Furman University Army ROTC, Greenville County Schools, the Fourth Congressional District Office and various Upstate Military Veterans Groups will be held from 6-8 p.m., Friday, May 16th on Main Street from Washington Street to North Street in Downtown Greenville. The purpose of the celebration is to honor active, retired and deceased men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces for service to the nation.
In past years, Armed Forces Day has been celebrated with a parade through downtown Greenville. Instead of a parade this year, Armed Forces Day is again combining with Main Street Events and Countybank Main Street Jazz and will feature military displays, Greenville County Schools’ bands and chorus, JROTC demonstrations, military flyover and a patriotic celebration in front of the Hyatt Regency at 7 p.m.
Lockheed Martin is the major sponsor this year, while The Greenville News, The Times Examiner, News Radio WORD and others have signed on as major media sponsors. Other local businesses are also supporting the event through various contributions.
Participants will include active and reserve military units, the Greenville Joint Veterans Counsel, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Marine Corps League, Military Officers Association of America, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Veterans Service Corps of SC, Blue Star Mothers, Patriot Guard, Woodruff Road Exchange Club, Historic Military Vehicle Clubs, Civil Air Patrol, Boy and Girl Scouts, high school bands, ROTC and JROTC units and other military groups. Elected officials at the state and county levels have also been invited to participate.
