This Week’s Healthy SC Challenge Tips

First Family Encourages Healthy Changes in Nutrition, Exercise and Tobacco Use

Columbia, S.C. - July 16, 2007 - The Healthy SC Challenge is the Sanford family’s effort to get all South Carolinians to do just a little more to live a healthier lifestyle. The tips are designed to encourage individuals and communities to live healthier lifestyles in three categories - nutrition, exercise and help to quit smoking. The tips can also be found on the challenge’s website, www.healthysc.gov.

Healthy Tips

Nutrition

Add some good nutrition to your summer reading list! The consumer market overflows with publications on nutrition, fitness and health. The American Dietetic Association website lists publications covering a broad range of nutrition and health topics and provides reliable, timely nutrition information for personal, school, library and community use. Most are available at local libraries and bookstores.

Physical Activity

Regular physical activity is important for your overall health and well-being. Include activities that you enjoy and can easily fit into your daily routine-such as walking your dog, working in your garden, or riding your bike. Being active for 30-60 minutes on most days can help you build strength and fitness, relax and reduce stress, gain more energy, and improve your sleep. These benefits all add up to decreasing your risk of heart disease and other conditions, such as colon cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, and high blood pressure.

If you have been inactive for several years or are currently under medical care, please consult your doctor before starting a new exercise program.

Tobacco

Learn to be a nonsmoker. Use what you have learned about why and when you smoke to make changes in your habits that make it easier to quit. You can’t avoid all your smoking triggers, but you can resist them, especially if you know what to do when you have the urge to light up. Use the Four D’s any time you crave a cigarette. They are simple to do. And you can use them no matter where you are.

1. Drink water.

2. Delay.

3. Deep breathe.

4. Do something else.
