ONE Sabbath highlights how local houses of worship can save lives around the world
Columbia, S.C. – Eleven South Carolina houses of worship and ONE: The Campaign to Make Poverty History joined together, yesterday, to raise awareness about the plight of extreme poverty and the actions people of faith can take to respond to the crisis.
ONE is worked with churches, temples, synagogues and mosques across the country in preparation for the first ONE Sabbath, which will took place this past weekend. In services and discussions and at events, ONE Sabbath challenges congregations to get involved in the movement to fight extreme poverty, hunger and disease in the poorest parts of the world. The program not only raises awareness about the issues surrounding extreme poverty, but also gives congregations and individual believers the tools to respond within their own faith traditions and obtain resources from ONE partner organizations. Congregations can sign-up for ONE Sabbath and key materials at www.ONE.org/faith.
“People of all faiths share a common calling to help those in need and to take action. Through ONE Sabbath, local congregations across the country will channel their vast compassion and energy into the movement to combat extreme poverty and global disease,” Mark Brinkmoeller, the national coordinator of ONE Sabbath, explained.
ONE Sabbath facilitates a community-wide moment of reflection on the scourge of global disease and extreme poverty. Houses of worship discuss such daily tragedies as the 27,000 children under age five who die each day from preventable disease, the 12 million children around the world who have lost a mother or father to diseases like AIDS or malaria, and the one billion people who live on less than a dollar a day.
More than discussing the challenges of extreme poverty, however, ONE Sabbath focuses on the positive actions people of faith can take to respond and the proven, effective solutions that are working on the ground.
As congregations sign up to be part of ONE, they join more than 2.4 million Americans of all backgrounds who are working to mobilize their communities and encourage their leaders to make the fight against extreme poverty a priority. ONE also includes over 150 of the nation’s leading relief and humanitarian organizations, many of which are working in Africa and around the world to save lives by doing such things as providing bed nets that stop the spread of malaria, distributing hydration tablets to treat children with diarrhea and administering antiretroviral medication to treat people with HIV/AIDS. The full list of partners can be found at http://www.ONE.org/partners.

Frist’s Trip to SC Goes Phenomenally
National ONE Vote ‘08 Co-Chairman, former U.S. Senate Majority Leader and doctor, Bill Frist did some incredible outreach for the ONE Campaign in South Carolina last week. One story he told, at a luncheon at the Capital City Club in Columbia, really stood out to me:
Late one evening, after he had completed surgeries on several people in Sudan, and he thought he was finished for the night, a man whose arm had been severed came asking for the “American Doctor.”
Senator Frist said, “The man did not seek me out because I was doctor, but because I am an American.” The man wanted to thank Senator Frist for demonstrating that America cares about Africa and that the senator’s presence in Africa gave him hope of one day realizing the American ideals, such as freedoms we too often take for granted. During a State of The Union Address, Senator Frist said he had “realized the greatness of the spirit of America” and “because of our greatness we have the opportunity to provide clean water and provide health care and do it with a humanitarian purpose, which is the purpose of the ONE Campaign.”
Over eighty of South Carolina’s finest from the education, faith, political and business communities attended the event. Special guests included the ONE Vote ‘08 South Carolina Co-Chairman Governor Jim Hodges, State Director for Congressman Wilson’s office Butch Wallace; former U.S. Ambassador to Tanzania Robert Royall; SC Democrat Party Chairman Carol Fowler; Founding Partner of ViaNovo Tucker Eskew; and the S.C. Attorney General Henry McMaster.
We were very appreciative of all that Senator Frist does for ONE Vote ‘08, both nationally and within the state of South Carolina. His impact has already been felt as members of the audience are continuously reminding us of how successful the event was and how they now wish to contribute to our purpose.

Republican congressman joins effort to rally presidential hopefuls in the fight against global AIDS, malaria and hunger
Columbia, SC – Congressman Joe Wilson (R-SC) joined South Carolina’s ONE Vote ’08 campaign today, signing on as Republican co-chair to help lead the movement to make the fight against diseases such as AIDS and malaria a key foreign policy issue in the 2008 South Carolina presidential primary.
As Republican co-chair for ONE Vote ’08 in the state, Wilson will talk with candidates and voters about the need for America’s next president to take the lead in ending global poverty and preventable disease in the developing world. Wilson brings a wealth of experience in South Carolina politics to ONE Vote ’08, having served 17 years in the South Carolina Senate before being elected to congress in 2001.
“I am honored to be named co-chair of South Carolina’s ONE Vote ’08 campaign,” said Congressman Joe Wilson. “This nation has made great strides in our global struggle against AIDS, malaria and hunger. But there remains a tremendous amount of work to be done. We must remain dedicated to fighting these deadly diseases and bringing food and medicine to the millions around the world who so desperately need our help. Any candidate for president must be committed to leading this nation towards meeting those goals.”
“I am looking forward to working with Congressman Wilson on these important issues. Together, I the Congressman and I will do our utmost to bring attention to ONE Vote ’08 during the South Carolina primary season,” said former Governor Jim Hodges, South Carolina ONE Vote ’08 co-chair.
In South Carolina alone, ONE Vote ’08 is mobilizing more than 15,000 ONE members this primary season, encouraging the presidential candidates to make commitments to address issues such as the lack of clean water and basic education worldwide at campaign stops, debates, town halls and coffee shops across the state. Wilson will join former Governor Jim Hodges to organize and promote ONE’s message in the state.
An unprecedented $30 million effort with political experts, high-profile faith leaders and national security experts behind it, ONE Vote ’08 is focusing on South Carolina and the other early primary states — Iowa, Nevada, and New Hampshire — to build a grassroots movement to encourage America’s next president to save lives and secure America’s future. ONE Vote ’08 is co-chaired nationally by former Senate Majority Leaders Bill Frist and Tom Daschle.
