College Republicans’ Statement on President George W. Bush’s Visit to Furman University

GREENVILLE, S.C. – In light of the recent controversy surrounding
President George W. Bush’s commencement address at Furman University on
May 31, Furman College Republicans’ chairman, and South Carolina College
Republicans state chairman, Taylor Hall released the following statement.

“I know that I speak for most Furman students in saying that it is an
honor to have our 43rd president as a commencement speaker. Commencement
is a time to celebrate the achievements of the graduating class and
President Bush’s visit will only make this ceremony more special for the
Class of 2008.

“We have been disappointed in how some members of the Furman community
have decided to politicize this special event, thus making graduation more
about President Bush than the graduating seniors. While we recognize the
right of everyone to freely express their opinion, students, faculty, and
staff alike should respect the senior class and remember what May 31 truly

“While many people may have disagreements with the president on a number
of issues, graduation is not a venue for political debate. I know that it
would sadden the senior class and their families if a few in the Furman
community turn this ceremony into a venue for rancorous political

“Out of respect for the Class of 2008 and the office of the President of
the United States, I sincerely hope that President Bush will be treated
with the respect any fellow human being deserves.”

Congratulations for achieving such a high honor graduating from Furman University!
In the future, I hope your class makes better decisions in life than that of inviting the worst President in history to your graduation. I’m sure you considered David Duke, Larry Craig and Osama Binladen……..

Mr. Finch, regardless your personal opinion about the relative quality of the tenure of the 43rd President of the United States, comparing him to the likes of David Duke, Larry Craig, and Osama Bin Laden effectively destroys your credibility to comment on the situation. Most reasonable, intelligent people, whether they agree with the President’s policies, are mature enough to recognize this is all about the seniors and their graduation and can congratulate them on securing such an important, high-profile individual to speak at their commencement. Perhaps, if nothing else, it demonstrates that these young people are willing to engage someone with whom they might disagree in order to hear and critically examine for themselves the thoughts of the leader of the free world.

    Congratulations, Furman class of 2008!
