D.J. Carson candidate for SC House District 77 says that candidates for State House should be honest about their record …

Richland Co., SC — May 21, 2008 — Last night in a candidates’ forum held at the historic I. DeQuincey Newman United Methodist Church in the Meadow Lake Community, my opponent Joe McEachern suggested that he fully supports public schools and public education in South Carolina. To quote, he stated, “You can check my record on my support for public education.”

Well, the Carson campaign has done just that, and we discovered that the councilman’s record simply doesn’t match up with his statements on the campaign trail. Mr. McEachern should truthfully explain to the educators and residents of House District 77 why, in his 2006 campaign for House Seat 77 against Representative John Scott, he took nearly $16,000 in contributions from pro-voucher and tuition tax credit advocates. In fact, these contributors were the same folks who contributed to pro-voucher, Republican candidates Karen Floyd and Sheri Few. How can Mr. McEachern claim that he fully supports public education when 60% of his 2006 campaign contributions came from these pro-voucher interest groups – groups whose sole mission is to divert public money away from public schools in order to send these funds to private schools in the form of vouchers, tuition tax credits, and home-school tax credits?

The residents of House District 77 deserve a State House representative who will be honest about his or her positions on the most important issues facing our district and state. No other issue is more important than fully supporting public education. I pledge that I will never take money from pro-voucher advocates and supporters. I pledge to fight everyday to ensure that our public schools are fully funded and have the complete support from the SC General Assembly.

With your help we can continue to bring needed change and solutions to House District 77. I ask that you say no to private-school vouchers and tuition tax-credits, and that you vote D.J. Carson on June 10 for SC House District 77. I will be a voice and champion for our kids and for public education in South Carolina.

D.J. Carson

Candidate for SC House District 77
