The State (SC Politics Today Blog): National Democrats aren’t targeting S.C.

Democrats unveiled their plan of attack in Congressional races Wednesday, and two South Carolina contests were nowhere to be found.

The “Red to Blue” plan released by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee includes 14 races where Democrats believe they can unseat a Republican lawmakers, and another 20 “emerging” races that could or could not be competitive this fall. But missing among that list candidates in South Carolina’s 1st and 2nd Congressional races.

Both of those race feature promising new Democratic candidates, Linda Ketner in the 1st and Rob Miller in the 2nd, running against long-time incumbents, Henry Brown in the 1st and Joe Wilson in the 2nd. Many Republican and Democratic observers believe Democrats could be competitive — though not necessarity victorious — in both races, particularly because Barack Obama is the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.

I have noticed some sense of embarassment among the more liberal Democrats concerning the conservative Democrat Bob Conley since they barely mention his potential to challenge the liberal leaning Republican Graham. This may play a part, though, not the only factor, in the de-emphasis on SC Democratic Congressional races.
