Peeler Names Verdin Senate Majority Whip

Columbia, SC- Senate Majority Leader Harvey Peeler (R-Gaffney) has announced that Senator Danny Verdin (R-Laurens) will serve as the new Majority Whip for the Senate Republican Caucus. The announcement came during an informal meeting of the Senate Republican Caucus, who had gathered to discuss the current election cycle and Caucus organizational matters.

“Senator Verdin understands the current political environment and the need for the Caucus to return to core conservative values,” says Senator Peeler. “He has been a behind-the-scenes leader in the Caucus on several important issues; now, as majority whip, he will have a more active role in the direction of the Caucus. Senator Verdin has earned the trust and respect of other Caucus members, as well as a reputation for being a hard worker, who is passionate about developing better government. As majority leader, I think he will be a trusted ally and I look forward to working with him.”

“Serving as majority whip opens up a new opportunity for me to serve the Senate and the people of South Carolina and for that I am very thankful,” says Senator Verdin. “Although, my primary responsibility will be to assist Senator Peeler as majority leader, I am a devotee to the conservative ideas and principles many South Carolinians value and I plan to remain true to those values.”

Senator Verdin went on to say, “The Senate enjoys the benefit of many tenured members who hold a vast amount of institutional knowledge and state history, along with a growing number of political newcomers who bring a fresh set of eyes to long standing issues. After only eight short years, I find myself in the unique position of bridging the gap between the two ends of the seniority spectrum. I intent to work toward building consensus on effective policy that will allow the Senate to work as cohesive unit and move the state forward.”

Senator Verdin was elected to the South Carolina Senate in 2001 and is currently the Chairman of the Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee.

The Caucus also welcomes six new members to its ranks. The new members

include: Senators Lee Bright (Spartanburg), Tom Davis (Beaufort), Shane Martin (Spartanburg), Mick Mulvaney (Lancaster), Mike Rose (Dorchester) and Phil Shoopman (Greenville).
