First Family Invites Public to Holiday Open House Sanford boys decorate tree with a “waste not” theme & Executive Chef creates gingerbread replica of SC Statehouse

Columbia, S.C. – Wednesday, December 3rd 2008- The First Family invites the public to the Holiday Open House from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 4th at the Governor’s Mansion Complex (800 Richland Street, Columbia, SC).

The First Family, Mansion docents and Columbia Garden Club hostesses will welcome South Carolinians to the Governor’s Mansion for a special Holiday Open House. The Mansion has been decorated by the Columbia Garden Club.  Music during the Holiday Open House will be provided by The Carillon Carolers.

Each year, the Sanford boys decorate their own Christmas tree which is displayed in the Charleston Garden inside the Mansion.  The theme of their tree this year is ‘waste not.’  Throughout the year, they have been collecting all of the old light bulbs at the Mansion.  In the spirit of recycling, they have turned these bulbs into painted ornaments which will adorn their ‘green’ tree.  In 2005, Toogoodoo Christmas Tree Farm in Yonges Island, SC donated a potted Christmas tree to the Mansion.  This will be the fourth year that the tree has been decorated by the Sanford boys.

This year’s decorations will include a gingerbread replica of the South Carolina Statehouse created by the Mansion’s Executive Chef Geoffrey D. Sandifer with the assistance of guest artist McClellan Douglas.
Other decoration highlights include an ornament collection made of hand painted gourds donated by the South Carolina Gourd Society, poinsettias grown by students at the Lexington Technology Center, Christmas wreaths provided by the Horticultural Division of the Department of Corrections, and trees provided by the SC Christmas Tree Association.

Both the Mansion and the Lace House will be open to the public and members of the media at the Holiday Open House. The Holiday Open House will be free of charge and open to the public. The Mansion gift shop, located in the basement of the Caldwell-Boylston House, will also be open during the tour. The Mansion will be open for tours by appointment through the holidays – please contact Nancy Bunch at 803-737-1710 for availability.

Editor’s Note: Those wishing to shoot still photographs and b-roll video of the Mansion Complex in advance of the Open House (to which they are also invited) should come to the Mansion on Wednesday, December 3rd between 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Interested press should contact Curry Hagerty in the First Lady’s Office 803-737-4772 to confirm a time.
