S.C. Democrats Applaud Signing of Historic Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act

Columbia, SC – South Democratic Party Chair Carol Fowler today applauded the signing of the historic Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act.  The first bill signed into law by President Barack Obama, the Act will ensure that American workers are treated fairly under the law by correcting wage disparities.

“President Barack Obama today sent a powerful message about our commitment to equality and economic opportunity for every American by making good on his promise to pass the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act,” said Fowler.  “At a time when families around South Carolina are struggling to address the current economic crisis, it is more important than ever that our economy works. Democrats fought hard to pass this legislation and end the wage disparities that have resulted in women making just 78 cents for every dollar men earn.  That disparity hurts not only women but all of our families, and I am proud that President Obama signaled the importance of the principle of equal pay for equal work by making the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act the first bill signed during his presidency.”

This is long overdue, but I’m not sure it’s going to make much of a difference. As a society we need to start raising our daughters to ASK for what they want rather than politely waiting for someone to notice them.

A new page is turned as history is in our presence. On this historical day of January 29, 2009, we thank Lilly Ledbetter for keeping up the fight. We applauded President Barack Obama for wasting no time to sign the Fair Pay Bill. This Bill is a big win for women everywhere. The fights for education and fair treatment of women in today’s world battles go on. Women won’t be free until women every where is free from domestic violence, bodily mutilation and the list goes on. Today, perseverance meets justice, and the Fair Pay Bill was signed. This law will enable more Americans to get equal pay for equal work. Thank s Lilly Ledbetter
