Update 02.13.2009: Sources tell SCHotline Karen Floyd will run for SCGOP Chair as early as this Saturday

February 9, 2009

Floyd Considering Run For GOP Chair After Katon Dawson’s announcement Saturday that he would not seek re-election, numerous names for possible candidates began floating around.  Party activists dissatisfied with their current choices quickly narrowed the list to those they thought could win.  Namely, Glenn McCall and Karen Floyd.  A source close to Floyd made it clear that she would defer to McCall and support him, should he run.  In a phone call this morning, Glenn McCall told SCHotline that he had no intention of seeking the chairmanship this year.  Upon this news sources tell us that Karen Floyd, who continues to be deluged by calls from activists looking for a candidate they can support, is seriously considering offering herself for chairman.    A decision is expected within days.

Karen ran a great race for S.C. State Superintendent of Education in 2006. However, this source
    http://www.southcarolina08.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=202
    says two disturbing things:
    1. “Karen Floyd ended her campaign $180,000 in debt (and that was after a $40,000 bail-out from the South Carolina Republican Party).”
    2. “And this is who’s gonna be heading up political advising and fundraising in South Carolina for Rudy Guiliani in 2008? Seriously, Rudy?”

    This source
    http://www.campaignmoney.com/political/contributions/karen-floyd.asp?cycle=08
shows that Karen maxed out her contribution to Rudy’s campaign, meaning that she believed in him that much.

While I believe that Republicans should be able to back any candidate they like, it was apparent that Rudy G. was way too left-wing to survive the Republican Presidential primary in South Carolina.

Questions that must be answered before Karen Floyd is taken seriously as a candidate for SCGOP Chairman include:
    * Was she only helping out Rudy because there was money to be made which she needed to pay off her debt?
    * Was the reason why she maxed out her personal contribution to Rudy in March 2007 because she had already paid off all her 2006 campaign debt?
    * Was a precedent set in accumulating that much debt, such that it that will carry over to the SCGOP?

Given the mess that the Democrats are making in Washington and the swing back toward conservatism that Republicans should be making, wouldn’t a better fit for SCGOP Chairman be someone who backed a true right-wing conservative for President?

In my opinion, until the S.C. General Assembly passes a law that makes the office of S.C. State Superintendent of Education an appointed position, Karen Floyd would be better off running for that office in 2010 instead of SCGOP Chairman in 2009.

We heard two weeks ago that the Governor was urging prople to support Karen for State GOP Chair. Interesting in that she could not even win her own race so how can she help others win theirs!?!? Republicans did not vote for her and will not support her in this race, either. I agree with Katon 100% – it is the lay people’s party, not the elected officials. Senators DeMint and Graham should stay out of this.

Karen has a lot of moxie. And she is very focused. I think, next to Katon, she is the best!

I too know Karen. She is a hard worker and never gives up. On the down slide, she’s neurotic, a control freak and often has no idea what she’s doing. She will turn any group / party she “runs” into a group of frustrated, bored, fed-up individuals running for the exits.

Let’s get to the basic problem before we move on. We need a real governor in S.C. (Get rid of that man Sanford;he should be impeached
since he doesn’t have the decency to step down from office. He is a
total drain on the party or any goals for the future. He has too great
character flaws for public. No one has respect for such a self-centered person. He has no respect for family, office, country, or any
    thing except himself.)
We as Republicans need to let the country and people know we will not
tolerate corruption and lies. That we have a spine and courage able to
    lead and accept responsibility.
I strongly encourage you to remove Sanford from office then move on withour goals for the future.
