AG MCMASTER RESPONSE TO ASSOCIATED PRESS CRAIGSLIST REPORT
RESPONSE TO ASSOCIATED PRESS CRAIGSLIST REPORT
Columbia, S.C. May 22, 2009 – This afternoon’s Associated Press story gives the impression that the federal judge has ruled in the craigslist case. That is not correct. This is a CONSENT ORDER drafted by both parties this week and agreed upon by both parties. The judge has not ruled for or against any party.
This is a routine legal procedure and the equivalent of a “time out” that gives both parties time to prepare for a hearing before the judge.
The Attorney General’s office would not have signed this consent agreement if craigslist had not removed the prostitution ads from its site earlier in the week as requested.
