DeMint’s base vote against Sotomayor
Columbia, S.C. – The U.S. Senate today confirmed Judge Sonia Sotomayor for United State Supreme Court, despite U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint’s opposing vote.
Carol Fowler, chair of the South Carolina Democratic Party, made the following statement today on DeMint’s vote:
“Judge Sotomayor was one of the most qualified and experienced nominees that has come before the Senate for confirmation in decades. Many conservatives joined in the bipartisan vote for her confirmation on those grounds, including Senator Lindsey Graham. They should be applauded for their political courage.
“Yet our junior Senator chose to stick with his base of narrow-minded interest groups, including the Heritage Foundation. The Washington, D.C., think tank’s leader on July 27 introduced DeMint by saying, ‘here we call him the senior senator from the Heritage Foundation’.
“Well, here in South Carolina we call DeMint an extremist who is out of touch with the real needs of all but the wealthiest of our citizens. The Heritage Foundation can have DeMint and South Carolinians will elect his replacement in 2010.”
