Governor Sanford to Participate in USMC “Mud Run” Saturday
Columbia, S.C. – September 18, 2009 – As part of Governor Sanford’s ongoing “Family Fitness Challenge” emphasizing physical activity and healthy living for all South Carolinians, the governor will be participating in the U.S. Marine Corp’s “Mud Run” at Fort Jackson this Saturday. He will run on his third son Bolton’s team.
“Something we’ve been stressing since Day One is that physical fitness and wellness can go a long way toward making a difference in each of our lives,” Gov. Sanford said. “Tomorrow’s race – this will be Bolton’s first Mud Run, whereas I’ve run them with Marshall and Landon in years past – is a good chance to highlight the importance of getting exercise, whether it’s a 10K run, a brisk morning walk, or gardening in the back yard.
“On a personal note, I’d lay out two friendly challenges: The first is to friends and colleagues in both the media and legislative branch that may be taking to the starting line tomorrow as we enjoy what I hope will be a great Saturday with some of our nation’s finest soldiers. Bolton has said he is betting a case of Gatorade on his team’s time prevailing with these two groups! The other is to people across South Carolina to help this cause for the families of fallen soldiers.”
The USMC Ultimate Challenge Mud Run, sponsored by the Greater Columbia Marine Foundation, is now in its sixteenth year. Profits from the event go to the families of Marines in the Columbia area who’ve been wounded or killed while on active duty, as well as to several local college scholarships named after Marines who have lost their lives while serving their country.
