Governor Sanford Comments on Attorney General’s Yucca Mountain Lawsuit

Columbia, S.C. – February 24, 2010 – Gov. Mark Sanford today issued the following statement regarding the Attorney General’s decision to pursue legal options to keep the Yucca Mountain project active.

“We’d thank the Attorney General for helping us bring this back-room Washington D.C. deal into the light and taking legal action to make sure the 23-year bipartisan Yucca Mountain compact is honored by President Obama and Congress,” said Gov. Sanford. “As we made clear last week alongside local, state and national leaders, this is not a Republican or Democratic issue * or even a South Carolina or Nevada issue * but indeed an American issue. It represents a decades-long, $10 billion broken promise to the American people. Given the overwhelming support from people across the state, the conversations we’ve had with other Governors around the nation and conversations the Attorney General has had with his counterparts, we think there is indeed some momentum behind this push to keep the President on the course of safe, secure nuclear storage * and we’d again thank the Attorney General for his efforts on this front.”
