GRESHAM BARRETT AND THE VALUE-ADDED TAX BARRETT HAS REPEATEDLY COSPONSORED BILL THATINCLUDES VALUE-ADDED TAX

Barrett Is One Of Five Republican Co-Sponsors Of Democrat Bill That Includes-Value-Added Tax. “The idea of a value-added tax (VAT), attacked by national Republicans ever since it was floated by a White House adviser, has some GOP supporters in Congress. Five Republican House members are co-sponsors of a bill by Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.) that would impose a VAT on imports from countries that use the tax. …  The other House Republicans who have co-sponsored Pascrell’s bill are Reps. Gresham Barrett (S.C.), Howard Coble (N.C.), Lynn Westmoreland (Ga.) and Joe Wilson (S.C.).” (Walter Alarkon, “Value-Added Tax Has Some GOP Backers,” The Hill’s “On The Money Blog,” thehill.com, 5/03/10)

Barrett Sponsored Similar Legislation That Included VAT In 110th Congress. (H.R. 2600, “The Border Tax Equality Act Of 2007,” Introduced: 06/07/07, Congressman Barrett Cosponsored 11/7/2007)

BARRETT HIMSELF DENOUNCED THE VALUE-ADDED TAX

Barrett Said VAT Would “Stifle Job Creation.” BARRETT: “I am very concerned about reports that the President is considering implementing a European style value-added tax on Americans. Let me be clear: implementing a VAT tax will not fix our country’s financial woes; it will only place a greater financial burden on our nation’s private sector and stifle job creation during a time of economic hardship.”  (Congressman J. Gresham Barrett, Press Release, “Barrett Calls On President To Denounce VAT,” 4/22/10)

Barrett Called VAT A “Massive Tax Increase.” BARRETT: “As a member of the Financial Services Committee, I understand first-hand how important it is to get our nation back on track financially. Instead of looking to European tax codes for solutions, we need to develop free market ideas to address our financial problems while strengthening our economy. I strongly urge the President to denounce his support for this massive tax increase.” (Congressman J. Gresham Barrett, Press Release, “Barrett Calls On President To Denounce VAT,” 4/22/10)

VALUE-ADDED TAX IS EFFECTIVELY A NATIONAL SALES TAX

Conservative Columnist Charles Krauthammer Called The VAT A National Sales Tax. “As the night follows the day, the VAT cometh. With the passage of Obamacare, which created a vast new middle-class entitlement, a national sales tax of the kind almost universal in Europe is inevitable.” (Charles Krauthammer, Op-Ed, “The VAT Cometh,” National Review Online, 3/26/10)

· “That’s where the value-added tax comes in. For the politician, it has the virtue of expediency: People are used to sales taxes, and this one produces a river of revenue.” (Charles Krauthammer, Op-Ed, “The VAT Cometh,” National Review Online, 3/26/10)

Americans for Tax Reform’s Grover Norquist Called VAT A “European-style Sales Tax.” “What is a VAT? Put simply, a VAT is a European-style sales tax. It’s assessed on the profits generated at every stage of production (raw material, manufacturer, wholesaler, retailer, etc.), so there is constant reporting and payment. As such, it’s an extremely efficient money machine for big government. The VAT is embedded inside the price of a good (as opposed to the U.S., where sales tax is transparent and on top of the price). As such, people forget they pay it, and European governments have found it too easy to raise the tax repeatedly over time.” (Grover Norquist, “Don’t Give Obama A VAT,” Human Events, 04/23/10)

VALUE-ADDED TAX IS POTENTIAL OBAMACARE REVENUE SOURCE
Krauthammer Said That VAT Is The Only Way To Pay For Obamacare. “Obama’s strategy is exactly the opposite: Expand the beast, and then feed it. Spend first — which then forces taxation. Now that, with the institution of universal health care, we are becoming the full entitlement state, the beast will have to be fed. And the VAT is the only trough in creation large enough.”  (Charles Krauthammer, Op-Ed, “The VAT Cometh,” National Review Online, 3/26/10)

President Obama Has Floated The Idea Of Implementing A VAT. PRESIDENT OBAMA: “That [Value-Added Tax] is something that has worked for some countries. It’s something that would be novel for the United States.”(CNBC’s “Street Signs,” 4/21/10)
