State Treasurer Has Failed to Release E-mails Referring to Lost $60 Million

WEST COLUMBIA, SC – Today, Conservative Republican Curtis Loftis launched the first radio ad of his campaign for State Treasurer.

The ad contrasts the need for conservative change and transparency with the current State Treasurer’s refusal to conduct an audit or disclose documents regarding an accounting error which created a $60 million state budget shortfall.

When news broke twenty days ago that an accounting error left the state budget $60 million short, Curtis Loftis called for an immediate audit of the State Treasurer’s Office and for all documents regarding this matter to be made public.

Since April 14, the State Treasurer’s office has refused to release the documents or conduct an audit. The Treasurer’s Office has not been audited since June 30, 2008.

Today, Curtis Loftis issued the following statement:

“South Carolinians are tired of the State Treasurer playing games with the facts and with our public funds.  We deserve transparency and accountability from our elected officials especially when significant errors cost our state nearly $60 million.

There is no excuse for Converse Chellis playing hide and go seek with the facts.

If the Treasurer has nothing to hide, then his office should have released these documents twenty days ago.  His persistent refusal to release these documents and audit his office raises additional questions regarding his ability to manage state funds.

As State Treasurer, I will create the most transparent State Treasurer’s office in the country and run state government like my business.”

Announcer: Republican Curtis Loftis…

Curtis Loftis: In business, if you lose $60 million dollars, you’ll get fired, or maybe even worse.

In state government, if you lose $60 million dollars, it’s just another day in Columbia.

That’s got to change.

Hi, I’m Curtis Loftis, business owner and conservative candidate for State Treasurer.

I was outraged when I found out the State Treasurer lost track of $60 million of our tax dollars.

Lost track of?  How do you lose track of $60 million dollars?

This is your money, the taxpayers’ money we’re talking about.

We’ll never have accountability in state government until we have transparency in state government.

That’s why I’m calling for an audit of the State Treasurer’s office.

As taxpayers, we deserve to know how these funds went missing.

If our current State Treasurer was your CPA, you’d fire him in the spot.

And that’s exactly what we need to do on June the 8th.

Announcer: Curtis Loftis…small business owner…Republican…the conservative change we need.

There simply is no excuse for Converse Chellis to withhold the emails about this 60 million. It is a slap in the face to hard working taxpayers of South Carolina.

Trusted CPA my rear end. Chellis is dumb as a post. Only reason he got the job is that he was selected by the General Assembly, not elected by the people. he is just a “good ole boy” and he will never release those emails. It ain’t in his DNA to be transparent.

    Treasurer misplaces 60 million

HHS over spends by 67 million

    Clemson’s error is 75 million.

What kind of controls do we have as a state? Everyday it seems something goes wrong. I think the only reason we are hearing about it now is that the state is broke, so the errors can’t be hidden. Othrwise, we would never hear of these problems.

This kind of stuff makes no sense. How can an eleceted official not release the emails that show what happened to OUR money?

You can’t make this stuff up. Chellis needs to release the documents or go home!

I don’t care about the emails, but I do like his SUV. If Converse is defeated, wiil the state sell his sweet ride? As a taxpayer that paid for the thing in the first place, will we get first shot at buying it?

I would feel like a real plantation owner driving around in that Tahoe. 4 wheel drive, navigation package, tow package, electric wench, etc….SWEET RIDE! AND NO NEED TO PIMP IT NOW…THE STATE OF SC DID IT FOR HIM!
