Gov. Sanford Welcomes First Quality to South Carolina

COMPANY’S MOVE REPRESENTS FIFTH 1,000-PLUS JOBS ANNOUNCEMENT IN LAST YEAR

INVESTMENT LARGEST IN UPSTATE SINCE BMW, LARGEST IN ANDERSON CO. HISTORY

Columbia, S.C. – May 14, 2010 – Gov. Mark Sanford today welcomed First Quality to Anderson County. First Quality, a producer of tissues, paper towels and other products, will bring $1 billion in investment and add 1,000 jobs over the next decade – representing the largest capital investment in the Upstate since BMW, as well as the largest investment in Anderson County history.

“First Quality’s decision to come to South Carolina represents an incredible compliment to our state,” Gov. Sanford said. “First Quality started more than twenty years ago with just six employees. Since that time, they’ve grown to a company with more than 3,000 employees with manufacturing operations across several states – and their products are competing with global giants in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

“I’d also point out that today’s announcement is part of a larger narrative of job creation we’ve seen unfolding over the last several months. Since this past Monday, in fact, our Commerce Department has announced $1.2 billion in capital investment coming to South Carolina and 1,400 new jobs for South Carolinians. That’s a new job every one minute and 42 seconds of this work week.

“Indeed, our state is actually led the entire Southeast in 2009 in job recruitment. Over the last several months we’ve made four 1,000-plus job announcements, with First Quality representing the fifth. Boeing’s decision to land in North Charleston last fall marked the largest economic development announcement in state history. We’ve made strides in rural economic development, including six project announcements in Hampton, Allendale, Bamberg and Barnwell Counties totaling 1,139 new jobs. And we’ve expanded our state’s QuickJobs training program, led the nation by certifying over 100,000 South Carolinians for Career Readiness, and graduated 94 percent of our Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG-SC) students, easily besting the national standard.”

Headquartered in New York, First Quality began operations in 1988 in Clinton County, Pennsylvania.
