Loftis Cites Another Example of State Treasurer Using Tax Dollars to Fund His Campaign Operation

WEST COLUMBIA, SC – Conservative Republican candidate for State Treasurer, Curtis Loftis, today issued the following statement regarding his opponent’s ongoing pattern of using public funds to underwrite his campaign operation.

“On May 23rd, Converse Chellis told a reporter with the Post and Courier that he would be reimbursing the taxpayers for the fuel in his state owned vehicle he’s using while making campaign stops.  As of today, there is no indication that Chellis has reimbursed the state for personal use of his vehicle, including fuel, since December of 2009,” said Loftis. “That means Converse Chellis has literally been taking a free ride at taxpayers’ expense.”

Last week, the Spartanburg Herald Journal noted that Chellis’ Deputy Treasurer was campaigning for him while collecting a state salary.  This is in clear violation of state law.

“Throughout the campaign, I have pointed to a glaring problem we have in this state.  Chellis is using the Treasurer’s Office to fund his campaign efforts,” Loftis concluded.

Tonight on WMBF TV in Myrtle Beach Chellis said he paid for all personal use on his SUV. That would of course include the campaign. His campaign spending forms show no payment.

He is a crook, and everyone knows it.

What a mess we have when a guy can commit fraud in broad daylight and no one seems to care.

    Chellis must go!

I was one class behind Converse at the Citadel. I liked him well enough, but I see he has lost his honor. Following his campaign has made me sad.

    Shame on you Converse.
