Gov. Sanford to Discuss Cell Phone Jamming Technology at SC Prisons
Columbia, S.C. – September 21, 2010 – Governor Mark Sanford will join Corrections Director Jon Ozmint and law enforcement officials from across South Carolina tomorrow (Wednesday, September 22) to discuss cell phone jamming technology and the role this technology could play in increasing public safety. Flanked by Capt. Robert Johnson – the victim of a recent assassination attempt coordinated via a smuggled cell phone inside a South Carolina prison – and by wardens from all 28 of South Carolina’s prisons, the Governor and Director Ozmint will address the federal government’s continued ban on cell phone blocking technology, the same technology that may have prevented the attack on Capt. Johnson.
This media availability will take place at 10:00 a.m. outside Broad River Correctional Institution (4460 Broad River Road, Columbia; driving directions here: http://www.doc.sc.gov/institutions/brci.jsp#drive). For more information, please contact Ben Fox in the Governor’s Office, or Josh Gelinas at the SC Department of Corrections (803-896-8578).
