Loftis Takes On Pension Reform at National Association of State Treasurer’s Conference

PROVIDENCE, RI— South Carolina Treasurer-Elect Curtis Loftis was among a select group of finance officials this weekend as he attended the National Association of State Treasurers’ Conference in Providence, Rhode Island.

The conference was an invitation-only symposium for recently elected Treasurers designed to assist the transition into office. Topics for the weekend included policy, legislation and regulations, along with mentoring from veteran state finance officers.

Mr. Loftis took the lead in pension reform discussion.

“It is time for state treasurers to be proactive about reforming our pension systems and significantly decreasing our unfunded liabilities,” said Loftis. “We cannot keep kicking the can down the road to the next budgetary cycle. The time to act is now, and I intend to make South Carolina a model for the rest of the country.”

At the conclusion of the meetings, Loftis said, “This conference was an ideal environment to help me begin creating the most transparent and accountable State Treasurers’ Office in the country. Meeting with veteran State Treasurers can only help South Carolina build a more efficient and effective state government.”

NAST membership is composed of State Treasurers or Finance Officials from the US, Commonwealth territories and the District of Columbia. Headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky, NAST serves as the national organization to educate and improve State Treasury offices.
